Not
gay. Definitely not.
Really, I don't know how these ridiculous rumours even get started.
It's not that the clothes, the hair, the semi-nudity, the album-covers
incorporating certain icons and male porn stars, the unusual, strained and
highly secretive relationships, the Oscar Wilde obsession, penchant for
flowers and Gucci could point to any obvious conclusion.
No.
Morrissey is merely an enigma, wrapped in a mystery, wrapped in a gold-lamé
shirt. |

"The thing with Morrissey is that he is everything his
writing and his music suggest he is." Michael Bracewell, friend of Moz
and author.
"I think the closest comparison is with Warhol."
Bracewell. And we all know that Andy wasn't gay either. He did wear wigs
though...hang on Moz, there something you're not telling us?
"We were running around kissing each other, kissing
ourselves." Grant Showbiz, the Smiths' soundman. |

"I think the first time I spoke to him was when they
first did TOTP. They were pretty terrified and Morrissey asked me in a
whisper if I could cross the road to get him a can of hairspray. He was
acutely perfectionist. He cared about every detail." Jo Slee, Moz's
Personal Assistant. |

principal rooms." The Times Magazine, Nov '99. |

"Anyone who says The Smiths have split shall be severely
spanked by me with a wet plimsoll" The man himself.
Morrissey struck up a particularly intense friendship with
Michael Stipe, another icon of unconfirmed sexuality, which led to wild industry
rumour. Dave Simpson, Uncut magazine.
"Michael was great on that first tour. They met a lot and
used to correspond." Jo Slee. |

Another of Morrissey's long-term friends on the 1991-2
world tour was someone called Peter Hogg. But who was Pete Hogg? "Please
don't ask me," pleads Jo Slee. "Let me just refer you to the
'91 tour programme. Peter Hogg was down as "rent-a-chap", and that's all I
can say." Dave Simpson, Uncut magazine. |
